OUTLOUD 2008

"Great...The best TIE I've seen..."
Asst. Head Teacher, Whalley Range High School

"I've never seen our pupils so rapt in their attention, they were totally enthralled..."
Deputy Head, Southern Cross School

A new Manchester initiative aimed at ending homophobia through education called ‘Exceeding Expectations’ has launched a newsletter to be distributed to all adults working at secondary schools across the city.

The three year initiative to support schools will reach more than 12,000 education professionals with appropriate interventions, resources, training and advice on homophobia and sexuality.

The project is an unprecedented collaboration between the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, Manchester City Council Children’s Services (Manchester Education Partnership, Excellence in Cities, Service Improvement and Inclusion), Manchester Healthy Schools Partnership and ourselves at Hope Theatre Company.

The play OUTLOUD was created from interviews Hope conducted with young people in Manchester schools. The young people told their experiences of homophobia, coming out and both physical and verbal bullying. The play created from these interviews is both powerful and empowering, giving a voice to young LGB people and also students trying to fight discrimination in their school. The play was titled OUTLOUD to celebrate the young people across Manchester living their lives outloud and proud. Hope thanks all those involved in the creation of this project and will continue to help end homophobia and discrimination in our society. OUTLOUD is touring in 2008 and 2009 and is accompanied by a post-show workshop.
